Name: Kattiana Fugere
School: George Brown College
Year: First year
Major: Fashion Management
Fav thing about your campus: I love how the fashion program floor is so artistic. You get to see the projects that students have done displayed in the windows and the fact that there are two retail stores run by the fashion students gives you a good excuse to do some retail therapy when you are feeling a little bit stressed. (I mean why wouldn’t take advantage of that!?)
Dream Job: Stylist or CEO
What is your connection to mental illness?
The starting of first year of university I got diagnosed with mild depression and this past year I got diagnosed with general anxiety disorder. A few years ago I was never open about my mental illness because I was scared that others would judge me. I felt ashamed for who I was and there were plenty of days where I thought that I didn’t deserve to be alive because I wasn’t worth it. After two suicide attempts and self-harm, it made me open up my eyes and asked for help right away. It was hard at first, but it really does help. Everyone who is struggling with mental illness, remember that you are not alone, and it is okay to not be okay some days. The most important thing is that we get through it.
How do you deal with stress from school?
Most of the time I listen to music and colour in my colouring book. Since it’s fall right now and the nice colours outside, I like to go for walks to enjoy the fresh air and to enjoy the beautiful colours.
What does your campus do to help students' mental health?
We have the accessibility center and counselors for those who need someone to talk to.
Do you have any school year self care tips to share with other students?
Remember that your mental health is more important than your GPA. If you feel overwhelmed with school just take a little break, or have a day to yourself. Talk to a friend or family if you need to. Do whatever makes you feel at peace with yourself and the rest can wait.
