What is your connection to mental illness?
Mental illness has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember – even as a child. However, I think my struggles became most prominent when I was around sixteen – so almost seven years ago. Ever since then, my life has been a whirlwind of hospitalizations, treatment centers, psychiatrists, therapists – the list goes on. I have been diagnosed with depression, anxiety, BPD and PTSD.
How have you overcome your struggles?
Overcoming my struggles and learning to live a life not completely consumed by mental illness has been a long journey. I honestly have made it to where I am today because of the three months I spent in residential treatment last year. This, without a doubt, changed my life and saved my life. I have been blessed to receive extraordinary treatment and I am eternally grateful.
What has been your greatest success so far?
I honestly believe that my greatest success has been living a recovery focused life these past few months. For so long I was so completely consumed by my illness – I did not see an end in sight. Now, I am living a life that is not ruled by mental illness. I consider that an amazing success!
Who is a Role Model look like to you?
A role model to me is someone that is kind to people, that goes above and beyond to make a difference and that also cares greatly for themselves. As important as it is to help others, I think it is also extremely important to take care of yourself.
How do you spend your Self-Care Sunday?
I love spending my Self-Care Sundays with my dog, Ronan, just watching TV and relaxing. My dog is my best friend and I really enjoy just spending time with him.
