Name: Jersain Steven Medina

City: Los Angeles (actually live in Huntington Beach,CA but visit LA a couple times a month)

Fav thing about your city: I love the different energy in people and the amount of people moving forward towards living is inspiring.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself! I’am an artist who is now pursing in becoming an architect and one day having my own fashion clothing company.

What is your connection to mental illness?

My connection to mental illness is not being comfortable in my own skin. It has had a negative impact on me to the point where I have gotten really self conscious and about myself in public, which lead to depression.

How have you overcome your struggles?

I want to say that I have overcome my struggles by the vision and dreams I’ve had about myself. I would much rather try doing something and failing than quitting or never trying at all at anything I want to put my time and heart in. The only thing that holds you back is the perception of yourself. I've overcome my struggles by using what negative things people said to me in my past, and the painful things that I have gone through, to motivate me and to push me forward in life.

What has been your greatest success so far?

My perspective on life changed when I was the most depressed I’ve ever felt in my life. It changed me completely- mentally and physically. Before I was obese and had very low expectations for myself. I then realized that I had to change. I started to ride my bike, a lot, I rode so much that I lost over 100 pounds, I went from weighing almost 300 pounds to currently weighing in at 187 pounds which has got to be one of my best life accomplishments. While I was physically getting healthier it was also cleansing my mind. Through overcoming my problems I was finally realizing that I am capable of any obstacle.

Who is a Role Model look like to you?

A role model to me looks like someone who is inspiring others to fulfill their dreams. Also someone who helps others when they are in need. It is the teachers that actually care about their student and take the time to teach student. A role model to me looks like a mother who can take of her 3 kids without a father in the picture and work a minimum wage job works 40+ hours a week and still cooks and cleans and spends time with her family. A role model to me looks like Ellen Degeneres who encourages us to be who we are. Elon Musk someone who cares about humanity and earth so much that he spends his time and energy into helping keep us and it alive.

How do you spend your Self-Care Sunday?

To be honest I work on Sundays and come home to do homework, one thing I do is have dinner with my family sometimes. That helps me have closure with the people I’m close to.
