Role Model: Grace

What is a Role Model? Not too long ago, we decided that it wasn't enough to cast fashion models based on comp cards and height. We wanted to showcase the stories of real people, who are brave enough to wear their label. Grace is one of those Role Models - in fact, she's our youngest ambassador yet. We share a Q&A with her:

My name is Grace, and I am 13 years old, and I was recently diagnosed with social anxiety. Having anxiety has impacted my life but has also taught me how to face my problems and overcome some of my fears.

WYL: What's your favorite method of self-care?
G: When I get overwhelmed with all my thoughts I like to swim laps. Swimming helps me clear my thoughts and calm my nerves. After a stressful day I like go to the pool, swim a couple of laps and just think to myself about everything that's happening and how it's going to be alright.
WYL: Why is mental health awareness important to you?
G: Awareness Is important to me because it's a fairly common thing and people need to understand that just because you have a mental illness doesn't mean that you're different from anyone else.  You can do anything you set your mind to.
WYL: Do you have a favorite quote you'd like to share with anyone going through a rough time?
G: My favourite quote is "do not confuse my bad days as a sign of weakness, those are actually the days I am fighting my hardest" - unknown

It is a beautiful thing you are speaking out about your anxiety especially at your age. When I was 13 I was diagnosed with general anxiety and it impacted me greatly feeling that no one else was going through the same thing. You are an inspiration to, and your courage in speaking out will help others :)! Best wishes.

Grace, I’m so proud of you!! You handle your mental illness so well even if you are just 13 years old :)
From now on I will have your favorite quote in my mind every single day I struggle with my obsessive thoughts. Thank you!!
