WYL: Tell us a bit about yourself!
NM: My name is Ndeera, I was born in Halifax and I've lived here for my whole life, except for about a year and a half that I spent in Iqaluit. I'm currently a junior at École Secondaire du Sommet, and I've wanted to attend the University of Ottawa since I was in middle school. Over the years, I've had many hobbies, but, at the moment, I really enjoy filmmaking, art, and photography. I'd love to become a filmmaker in the future, but I've also been quite interested in psychology, as of late.
WYL: What is your connection to mental illness?
NM: Many of my friends struggle with anxiety, which is my main connection to mental illness. Anxiety, just like any other mental illness, is different for everyone. It's really important to me to be there for anyone who's struggling and to understand how they're feeling, so that they never feel like they have to go through things alone.
WYL: What does a role model look like to you?
NM: For me, a role model is someone open minded, who's willing to listen to others and accept them for who they are. I think it's really important to have someone with whom one can speak openly and freely, without fear of being judged.
WYL: What is your greatest success so far?
NM: I think one of my greatest successes is learning to be comfortable with myself, and knowing that I can't be perfect at everything. In the past, I used to set such high goals for myself, that weren't attainable at the time, but now I've accepted the fact that as long as I'm doing my best, that's good enough.
WYL: Do you have any advice for someone who may be struggling?
NM: My advice for anyone who is struggling is to take time for yourself, and just love yourself in general. Take time to do the things that make you happy, and and surround yourself with people who love and support you.
1. If you were an animal, what animal would you be?
If I was an animal I think I'd be a fox or a deer! I'm not quite sure why, but I can see aspects of my personality in both of their demeanours.
2. Go to clothing item?
My go to clothing item is a black mock neck sweater, often paired with black high-waisted jeans. (Yes, I really like to wear black.)
3. What's the first thing you would do if you won the lottery?
The first thing I'd do if I won the lottery would probably be to donate part of, if not all of it, to a charity that helps young minorities.
4. Tell us something random about you!
A random thing about me is that I love the Harry Potter series! It's been a huge part of my life since I was 11, and it inspired me to start reading more. :)
